Open Division Format

6ix Pack

6 athletes. 3 pairs. 1 team.

Team of 6 is the APEX Games Open division format built around teamwork and strategy. Run every section together, split into pairs at every exercise block, and regroup before every run.

The Format at a Glance

6 athletes race as one team. All 6 complete every running section together. In each exercise block, the team divides into three pairs, with one pair on each station and all three stations running at the same time. Official race time stops when the sixth athlete crosses the finish line.

How The Race Works

The standard APEX course has 4 running sections separated by 3 exercise blocks. Each block contains 3 stations.

1

The whole team completes the running section together.

2

Nobody can break away from the team.

3

All 6 athletes enter the exercise block area together.

4

The team divides into three pairs.

5

One pair goes to each of the three stations.

6

Each pair completes its assigned station.

7

The two athletes in each pair share the station workload.

8

When a pair completes its station and receives sign-off, they move to the Team Waiting Zone.

9

They stay there until the other two pairs complete their stations.

10

Once all three stations are signed off, all six athletes leave together for the next run.

Pairs can change between exercise blocks, allowing teams to match athletes to stations based on strengths, fatigue, weights and race strategy.

Pick Your Pairs

Pairs are not assigned at check-in. Your team decides on race day, and pairs may change between exercise blocks. Match athletes to stations by strength, fatigue, station type, weights and race strategy.

2 Women

Women's Open Weights

Pairs cannot change in the middle of a station. Once two athletes begin a station together, those same two athletes must finish it.

Team Waiting Zone

Every exercise block has one. When a pair is signed off, both athletes move there and wait until all three stations are finished.

They Can

They Cannot

Help another pair
Take over another pair's station
Leave early for the next run

Sharing The Work

Partners split the station however they choose and may swap as often as they want.

Only one partner works at a time
Both athletes do not perform the exercise at once
The resting athlete stays beside the station

Running Together

All 6 athletes complete every running section in full, as one group.

Nobody runs ahead or breaks away
All 6 enter each exercise block together
If the group arrives split up, the team is held at the block entrance until all 6 are together

Handover Rules

How partners swap on each type of station.

Station
How The Handover Works
Farmers Carry, Chest Carry, Overhead Carry, Weighted Walking Lunges
The working athlete places the weight down where they stop. Their partner picks up the same weight and continues from exactly that position. The judge identifies and marks the handover point.
Burpee Broad Jump
The next athlete begins with their toes behind the position where the previous athlete's heels landed.
Deadball Ground to Overhead
The required reps are shared between the pair. The judge counts the pair's combined total of 100 reps. Only one ball is used.
Bike, Row, Ski
Distance is cumulative on one machine. The outgoing athlete must be completely off the machine before the incoming athlete begins.

Weights

Weights are set by the two athletes performing the station, not by the make-up of the whole six-person team.

If two women perform a weighted station, Women's Open weights apply. If the pair contains at least one man, Men's Open weights apply.

All-male Team

Men's Open weights throughout.

All-female Team

Women's Open weights throughout.

Mixed Team

The weight depends on the pair assigned to each station.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all 6 athletes have to complete the same amount of work?

No. Within each pair, the athletes decide how to split their station workload. The team also decides which pair takes each station. Every station simply needs to be completed according to the rules.

Can one pair complete more than one station in the same exercise block?

No. Each exercise block requires all three pairs to work on different stations at the same time, with one pair assigned to each station.

Can pairs change during the race?

Yes. Pair combinations can change between exercise blocks. Once a pair starts a station, however, those same two athletes must finish that station together.

What happens when our pair finishes first?

The pair moves to the Team Waiting Zone and stays there until the other two pairs have finished. Once all three stations are complete, the full team leaves together.

How do weights work for mixed teams?

Weights are determined by the pair performing that station. Two women use Women's Open weights. Any pair containing a man uses Men's Open weights.

How is Six Pack different from Team of 3?

Team of 3 places one athlete on each exercise station. Six Pack places a pair on each station, allowing the two athletes to share the workload while all six athletes still complete every running section together.
